LATEST VFD DEVELOPMENT FOR CIG LAUNCHED BY ITRON UK

Rapid technological developments and huge volume requirements in areas such as the telecommunications and data markets have a catalytic effect on the demands that systems engineers make on the reliability and price of power supplies and un-interruptible power supplies available.

Essentially, two principle methods are employed, at present, in the development of UPS. The first is based on a battery-powered inverter which provides a synthetic mains voltage sine wave whilst the other focuses on a float-charged lead acid battery that is capable of supplying d.c. power to the system load, when required.

A clear advantage with the first design is that the UPS can be attached to a very wide range of systems that have already been installed. The fact that the UPS can be added as an afterthought, however, leads to two substantial disadvantages. As the UPS has to provide capacity for the maximum anticipated load of the complete system, it requires to be bulky in size and, therefore, considerably more expensive.

Sussex-based ERL, a specialist manufacturer of UPS systems, has concentrated its development strategy on the second methodology which offers system designers a combination of high performance and low cost without compromising size and weight benefits. Such an integrated approach to UPS design provides an ideal solution to the problem of maintaining complete system integrity under mains failure.

The basic premise of the design is based on very simple principles. The electronic load of the system is supplied by a lead acid battery which is maintained on float charge by the a.c. to d.c. supply of the UPS. The normal running current is matched by the charging output of the power supply during standard operation. Transient loads which may be 5 or even 10 times higher than the running load are then met by the battery. This UPS design concept is particularly useful when peak currents can be very high as, for example, in security applications such as door opening solenoids or barrier-drive motor power. As the power supply can be sized to accommodate the mean power consumption, power rating requirements, size and, therefore, costs are reduced accordingly - which offers distinct advantages to the customer.

DSL has chosen to stock the ERL range of specialised UPS as the use of linear control technology provides very high isolation from mains borne interference and ensures high overall system reliability. Furthermore, the power transformers are of the split-bobbin design which enables exceptionally high common mode rejection ratios to be achieved. For instance, the ER115 power supply which is rated at 13.6V, 1A has been evaluated and approved by BT for use in conjunction with all equipment connected to BT lines including ISDN.

MW12832G - ACTIVE MATRIX VFD WHICH IS IDEAL FOR INSTRUMENTATION

Click Picture For Larger Image

Great Yarmouth based Itron (UK) Ltd has introduced the new MW12832G, one of the smallest graphic displays available on the market.

MW12832G comprises sixteen semiconductor chips, each with a 16x16 phosphor dot matrix which is driven by its own built-in display driver. This 128x32 dot display is complemented by a range which includes 128x16 dot, 64x16 dot, 256x16 dot and 256x32 dot displays.

The low voltage of 15V and a subsequently low power consumption of just 0.25W extends the operating life of these devices, at full brightness, to beyond 50,000 hours within an operational temperature range of -40 to +85°C. The simple interface and static drive results in a display that does not have to be scanned and this provides a flicker-free image and very low RFI.

Phosphor-on-Chip technology has produced a unique VFD that offers design engineers, industrial designers and sales/marketing executives the opportunity to display messages using a light, compact, high density, aesthetic display with multilingual functionality.

With it's high brightness of 3500cd/m coupled with a 0.3mm dot pitch, the product range can accurately reproduce Arabic, Japanese, Chinese and other complex language fonts. The product range is being designed into markets which include operating panels with display icons, communications equipment, compact instrumentation, vending machines and POS equipment. Customers in the Far East are currently looking at Phosphor-on-Chip technology for head-up display applications.

MW12832G is priced at £29.73 for 1,000 pieces.

CHIP-IN-GLASS VFD GRAPHIC DISPLAYS AT COMPETITIVE PRICES

Click Picture For Larger Image

With the ability to assemble the driver ICs within a glass envelope, Itron has reduced application costs for displays employing the Chip-in-Glass technology. The reduction in lead pin count from 140 pins to fewer than 15, for example, has significantly reduced the cost of assembly and, furthermore, offers increased reliability. Using these features design engineers can develop multi-purpose displays which could incorporate characters with bar graphs and icons.

The displays offering the greatest cost benefits in the range are the MN12808B, a 128x8 dot graphic display priced at £9.95 for 1,000 pieces and the MN12818A with 128x18 dots priced at £14.46 per 1,000. These graphic displays are aimed at users of 1x20 and 2x20 character displays allowing them an ideal upgrade to a more flexible graphic solution. The shift register latch driver in these displays can directly interface to the serial port of a microprocessor.

As more companies manufacture for global markets, the requirement for clear displays capable of handling various languages becomes imperative. The VFDs show the customer a bright message that can be read from a considerable distance at a wide viewing angle under many lighting conditions. A key feature of the product is that it can operate within temperatures of between -40 and +80°C under conditions of high humidity.

Itron UK 's patented Flexicombo interconnection development system is now available from Farnell Electronics. The manufacturer's first product to be offered via distribution was designed in the UK and enables engineers to easily adopt various interconnection solutions whilst connecting Itron's innovative 'Chip-in-Glass' Vacuum Fluorescent Displays to control boards.

Flexicombo is capable of accommodating connectors of 2.54mm, 2.00mm, 1.27mm, 1.25mm, 1.00mm and 0.8mm pitch with each array of pads providing sufficient length to solder at least 2 connectors, of the same pitch, back to back.

Ideal for 'in-line' testing, the Flexicombo PCB can be cut to accommodate a number of different ways. Furthermore, two Flexicombos, back to back can be soldered to a DIL IDC header to provide multiple interconnection from each.

In addition, Flexicombo can be cut to suit the number of SMT pads on an IC or any other similar component on the PCB.

Click Picture For Larger Image

Itron has developed a new range of graphic display modules to upgrade the established 1 x 16 alphanumeric display used in point-of-sale, amusement machines and industrial applications.

The project, code named Panther, will develop some 20 different products aimed at adding value and performance for the designer. The display comprises a 192 x 16 dot graphic format with 0.65mm pitch offering compatible dimensions and high brightness, coupled with the capability of high-speed animation.

The displays incorporate the new Chip-in-Glass technology allowing the module to be priced at just £29.73 for 1,000 pieces and £35.40 for 100-piece quantities, nearly 50% below conventional graphic VFD pricing.

The clock serial interface provides direct MSC1937 emulation, extended graphic functions and a new field programmable option allowing user graphics, fonts and commands to be downloaded into flash ROM from the user's system.

Additional RS232 and RS485 bi-directional serial interface allow easy connection to industrial and point-of-sale systems with multi-drop capability. The module operates from 5V d.c. at 500mA and features 16 levels of brightness control and software power-down at 12mA.
